For Ma...

OK- here comes the mother's day show- easy one. Mom likes Doo-Wop a lot, and she particularly likes Dion DiMucci, so that is what we have here. An hour of Dion, with or without the Belmonts, doing his thing.
Dion DiMucci- pretty interesting story there I figure- I can paraphrase it pretty quickly for the history buffs. Starts in 1957 with a handful of street kids singing on a corner in the Bronx and explodes. Seriously, this fellow was the Justin Bieber of the fifties (though back then, teen idols had talent- just listen, and then go check out Frankie Lymon as well). Check the picture- Winter Dance Party right? The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and Buddie Holly did not come back from that tour. Long story short, the guy has been treated more than once for heroin addiction that started in his teens, racked up a huge stable of hit records AND managed to do it again when music completely changed in the late sixties. He is still going strong today and performing in his seventies...so I guess the "Teen Idol" moniker is probably less true than it would seem. You will notice that their first hit, "I Wonder Why" has been suspiciously omitted. You have all heard that one and there were a few more I thought you ought to hear.
Then there is mom. Mom LOVES this stuff, and for this weekend, she is queen (she will tell you she is queen every day).
This definitely ain't for everyone, but give it a go- might find something you like in here. Tried to play some of the lesser known numbers I have laying around.
Cheers

Adam Yauch, MAC, thanks for the music. You left us too early but man what a gold mine you left in your wake.
DISCLAIMER- I have made, mostly because on my job, 2 shows that I had to mark explicit (out of 500). This is one of them. Parents- if you don't want your kids listening to explicit music, monitor their internet use. Don't censor, blame and create little warning stickers-just watch your kid.
OK- off the soap box- now time for some music.
Turn this up really loud.

I am going to admit a couple of things here. First, I know NOTHING about African music (except that it often sounds good to me). I also have no other goal than to fill myself with beer tonight and play some music really loud.
That said- I made a show of African music anyway. Really, to be an African music guy, you gotta be more hung up than a classical music guy. You gotta understand the difference between Soweto and High Life and about a million other genre's...you gotta have a dark room filled with badly recorded vinyl, cassettes, and CD's, and you have to wear a beanie that is red, yellow, and green.
No disrespect intended- I care about NONE of that. In fact, I care about none of that any time I listen to music- I am after sounds of joy. Sounds of joy made by people who are talented- not too much to ask. These are sounds of joy folks- the kinds of sounds that rarely peel through the dawn in Cloverdale California. Sounds of Joy created often in the most unimaginable despair (yeah- Google SOWETO), but sounds of joy none the less. Enjoy them.

Phalaviki (let the weekend come)- Irene and the Sweet Melodians

Not nearly as well known as many of their counterparts, both brotherly duo's (Louvin, Monroe, Stanley) or Grand Ole' Opry stars, I figure they are just as good.
In the twenty years that these fellows made records, they wrote over 1000 songs, so this is just a little drop in the bucket- may see more of them coming soon.
Remember- if you like what you are hearing, there is more for the asking over at http://www.kwtf.net/. My show typically streams all over again on Monday, but if you are here you already have it- go listen to what the other fine folks are putting out.

My mate Dirk asked me "Hey, why didn't you include any of the Audiophile sides?"...
Umm- because I don't have them.
Epic Fail.
So I go to get them. This is early October mind, but in a strange twist of fate, I end up sending irate emails on nearly a daily basis, losing $16 according to my bank, and never getting any CD love...
and then it becomes an obsession.
You see, ADD and OCD- they are best mates, so I think about this CD every day. I send another email. Then I finally crack- I order it from a big brand instead of the little guy because I am sure I am going to die without it, and it is here in three days.
And it is simply the best CD I have ever bought.
Now, I would not under normal circumstances post a podcast of songs entirely off a single CD, until today. Why am I doing so?
Ukulele Ike died penniless, with no family, and quite probably inebriated. Disney studios paid for his funeral because there was no one there to do so...shoot, I was not even born yet. That is neither here nor there see, because no one really owns the right to this music except that man who is gone...I ramble. Quite assuredly folks, listen to this a few times and you will see, it was meant to be heard by all. That is what Ike would want I figure- so here we go:
It All Belongs To Me
Saint Louis Blues
I’ll Buy The Ring And Change Your Name To mine
Paddelin’ Madelin’ Home
Paper Doll
Singin’ In The Rain
I Can’t Give You Anything But Love
In The Gloaming
Hang On To Me
Sweet Leilani
Ain’t Misbehavin’
My Melancholy Baby
What a Night For Spoonin’
Good Little Bad Little You
Together
Over the Rainbow
A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody
For Me And My Gal
Soft Lights and Sweet Music
Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight
A Song Of Old Hawaii
As always- enjoy

In any event- inspiration! Time to do a show featuring all the voices that make R&B so worthwhile a pursuit, all the voices that inspired so many...music music music at its best.
Here is what I came up with:
1.Kitty Stevenson- Good Man
2.Lavern Baker- Saved
3.Sherry Washington- La De Do De Do
4.Zilla Mays- Take Your Time
5.Ike and Tina Turner- Shake a Tail Feather
6.Big Mama Thornton- Hound Dog
7.Dorothea Flemming- The Devil is Mad
8.Faye Adams- That’s What Makes My Baby Fat
9.Gene and Eunice- I Gotta Go Home
10.Fluffy Hunter- Walkin’ Blues
11.La Melle Prince- Get High
12.Ruth Brown- Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean
13.The Burnadettes- First You’ve Got To Recognize God
14.Big MayBelle- Ocean Of Tears
15.Let Me Ride- Staples Singers
16.Blanche Thomas- You Ain’t So Much a Much
17.Rosette Perry- Farewell Blues
18.Little Esther Jones- Mean Ole Gal
19.Etta James- Roll With Me
20.Geneva Vallier- Said You Had a Woman
21.Hada Brooks- Jump Back Honey

As always- ENJOY!

In any event- inspiration! Time to do a show featuring all the voices that make R&B so worthwhile a pursuit, all the voices that inspired so many...music music music at its best.
Here is what I came up with:
1.Kitty Stevenson- Good Man
2.Lavern Baker- Saved
3.Sherry Washington- La De Do De Do
4.Zilla Mays- Take Your Time
5.Ike and Tina Turner- Shake a Tail Feather
6.Big Mama Thornton- Hound Dog
7.Dorothea Flemming- The Devil is Mad
8.Faye Adams- That’s What Makes My Baby Fat
9.Gene and Eunice- I Gotta Go Home
10.Fluffy Hunter- Walkin’ Blues
11.La Melle Prince- Get High
12.Ruth Brown- Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean
13.The Burnadettes- First You’ve Got To Recognize God
14.Big MayBelle- Ocean Of Tears
15.Let Me Ride- Staples Singers
16.Blanche Thomas- You Ain’t So Much a Much
17.Rosette Perry- Farewell Blues
18.Little Esther Jones- Mean Ole Gal
19.Etta James- Roll With Me
20.Geneva Vallier- Said You Had a Woman
21.Hada Brooks- Jump Back Honey

As always- ENJOY!</itunes:summary>

Soul Train was a Saturday favorite as a kid, and the line dance has become a permanent fixture in my classroom when we need a break...
So much great music the world would probably have missed if it were not for Mr. Cornelius striking out and doing what had never been done.
An innovator.
An inspiration.
A great loss to the world, but what a legacy he left us with.
Enjoy

1.Soul Train Theme 1976- The Soul Train Gang
2.Love Train- The O’Jays
3.Let’s Groove Tonight- Earth Wind and Fire
4.SUPERFLY- Curtis Mayfield
5.Tell Me Something Good- Rufus featuring Chaka Khan
6.Brick House- The Commodores
7.Nothing From Nothing- Billy Preston
8.Never Can Say Goodbye- Gloria Gaynor
9.Super Star- Temptations
10.Sex Machine- James Brown
11.Stand By Your Man- Candi Staton
12.This World- Staple Singers
13.Friendship Train- Gladys Knight and the Pips
14.Rock Steady- Aretha Franklin
15.Ike and Tina Turner- Bold Soul Sister
16.Dancing Machine- Jackson Five
